Creating a Diversity Strategic Plan

The newly-appointed Director of Diversity of this global
consumer products company recognized the value in
developing and executing a diversity strategy to enable the
company to retain talent and thereby increase productivity.
Critical Issues
- Reversing the significantly higher than average
turnover rate for African American employees
Solution
In partnership with Novations, the company assembled a
strategic work group to conduct an organizational needs
assessment, and develop the diversity strategic plan. The
work group consisted of the company's key business
executives. Interviews were also conducted with senior and
mid-level executives to incorporate their thoughts. The
final plan included:
- Leadership development training for all managers
- Formation of affinity networks for diverse groups
within the company, including African Americans, Gays &
Lesbians, and Women in general
- Regular diversity reviews conducted by the CEO
This approach resulted in a strategic diversity plan, which
aligned fundamental diversity practices with the
company's overall business objectives, and included
elements that considered the specific needs of the diverse
groups within the company.
Results
This intervention has resulted in change across several
important dimensions:
- A doubling of the promotion rate for people of
color
- A two-thirds reduction in turnover among people of
color
- Increased morale among both people of color and their
managers
