Lack of Diversity at Higher Levels
Industry: Software Development
Following the results of an organization-wide satisfaction
survey, the executives of a dot.com were surprised to learn
that their employees felt strongly about the lack of
diversity at higher levels of management. Prior to the
survey, executives assumed that issues of race or prejudice
did not exist within the company.
Critical Issues
- Increasing diversity in higher levels of the
organization
- Creating awareness among executives and some employees
about the organization's diversity issues
Solution
Working with Novations, the CEO appointed a diversity
council to study survey results and make recommendations
for improvements. Their response included:
- A powerful diversity statement/commitment incorporated
into the company's mission
- Development of an active recruitment campaign
targeting a more diverse pool of candidates
- Diversity education for managers and staff
Results
Over time, managers and employees who were originally
unaware of the diversity issues, accepted the survey
information. They were eager to embrace the new
requirements because of the larger framework in which they
were placed—a more harmonious workplace and an
increased competitive edge for the company.
