Improving Performance
Industry: Financial and Professional Services
Traditionally, trainees of this financial services company
who were people of color achieved lower results than their
counterparts on the required Core Training exams for new
analysts, and on their ratings by managers, tutors, and
peers.
Critical Issues
- Attracting and retaining black and Hispanic trainees
- Improving the trainee process to enable black and
Hispanic trainees to increase their performance on
exams
Solution
People of color in the Core Training Program were
introduced to Novations’ Skills and Strategies
for Success to develop practical study habits and
relationship building skills. In addition, the core exams
were changed to criterion-referenced pass/fail exams, and
everyone was given two opportunities to pass each exam.
Also, the practice of ranking trainees against each other
was dropped.
Results
Subsequently, all people of color in the Core Training
Program passed all three exams for the first time.
