Medical products company develops effective, consistent hiring process based on Novations’ TalentSelection training

Industry: Medical Products

A company that produces medical devices was losing money due to high employee turnover and a long, unproductive on-boarding process. Leadership resolved to add more consistency and structure company-wide to its selection process. In addition, they planned to use the training sessions as a platform for introducing their newly developed competency model.

Critical Issues

  • Reduce early turnover rates and identify candidates that more closely fit available roles in the organization.
  • Provide structured TalentSelection process and training for managers.
  • Teach associates in hiring positions to use behavioral interviewing skills to ensure fairness and legal defensibility and make the best hiring decisions possible.

Solution

Novations one-day TalentSelection program was enhanced with a second day of hands-on interview practice sessions utilizing students from a nearby university.  Participants were given specific tools for planning the selection process, instruction about how to use job-related questions and criteria, and expert feedback on their interviewing skills. The relevance of the training was heightened by using the client’s own trainers, rather than Novations trainers, to facilitate the program. The company’s new competency model became the centerpiece for its selection process.

Results

Approximately 200 associates, including technical staff, managers, and salespeople, were trained to conduct behavioral interviews. Several months after their training was completed, participants were asked to assess how well the tools and skills were working for them. One participant estimated that the new selection process would save the company approximately $870,000 per year. Ninety-five percent of those surveyed agreed that their hiring decisions were more objective and information-based than they were prior to the training. And perhaps most significantly, based on the success of the initial rollout, Leadership decided to institute the TalentSelection program globally.
